About Ruqiya

What is Ruqiya?

In practical terms, Ruqiya Sharia means ‘Islamic incantation’. The terminological meaning of Ruqiya is, “To seek deliverance from danger or cure from disease by reciting verses of the Quran, remembrance of the name of Allah, supplications narrated in the Hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or the Salaf Salehin.” Simply put, Ruqyia is Islamic incantation for paranormal problems such as evil eye, jinn, magic, etc., as well as for some physical and mental diseases. In this treatment, the verses of the Quran and supplications mentioned in the Hadith are usually recited and directly incanted, or it is said to be used by blowing on water, honey, oil, etc.

Timing & Effectiveness

How long does Ruqiya take to fix the problem?

First of all, it is not possible to say for sure for any disease in the world, only Allah knows this well. It will take as long as Allah wants. However, in the light of experience, it takes more or less time according to the length, breadth and depth of the problem. If Ruqyah is performed properly, it can take from 1 week to a month in the case of the evil eye. Another thing is that by Allah’s will, some problems remain for life in some people. They do not get completely cured. In this case, if the patient and his family do not take the help of any unlawful or kufr magic, and are patient in the danger, then in the Hereafter, Allah will give them forgiveness and Paradise in return.

(And We sent down the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss)
[Qur’an 17:82]

Ruqyah in Islam is the recitation of Qur’an, seeking of refuge, remembrance and supplications that are used as a means of treating sicknesses and afflictions such as:

The Qur’an is a cure

Ibn Al-Qayyim (rahimahu Allah) says:

The Qur’an is the complete healing for all mental, spiritual and physical diseases, all diseases of this world and the Hereafter. But not everyone is guided to use it for the purpose of healing.

If the sick person uses the Qur’an for healing in the proper way, and applies it to his disease with sincerity, faith, complete acceptance and firm conviction, fulfilling all its conditions, then no disease can resist it.

How can disease resist the words of the Lord of heaven and earth which, if He had revealed it to the mountains they would have crumbled and if He had revealed it to the earth it would have broken it apart?

There is no sickness, spiritual or physical, but in the Qur’an there is that which indicates its remedy, its cause and how to protect against it for those who are blessed with understanding of His Book.

حَسْبِيَ اللّٰهُ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ، عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ، وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيْمِ.

Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god worthy of worship except Him. I have placed my trust in Him only and He is the Lord of the Magnificent Throne.

Abū al-Dardā’ (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) narrates from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said: “Whoever recites [the above] seven times in the morning and in the evening, Allah will suffice him in everything that concerns him in matters of this world and the next.” (Ibn al-Sunnī 71)

What is Self Ruqyia?

Take steps to protect yourself

Apart from having a raqi to perform ruqiya, one can perform ruqiya for oneself or one’s family. This is called self-ruqiya.

Recite Protective Surahs Daily

Read Surah Al-Falaq (113) and Surah An-Nas (114) three times morning and evening to seek refuge from evil eye, jinn, and harm. These surahs shield you from spiritual and physical dangers.

Strengthen Faith with Prayer

Perform your five daily prayers consistently and make dua to Allah for protection and health. Salah keeps your heart and mind connected to Allah’s mercy.

Recite Ayat al-Kursi Regularly

Read Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255) after every prayer and before sleeping to guard against jinn and negative forces. This verse is a powerful shield for you and your family.
